Street Photography in Malta
In street photography, one of the most discussed topics is whether the photographer should photograph and publish images without peoples' permission. Personally, I do not think photographers should ask permission when photographing people in public. In terms of Malta, if the image will be published it would be best to ask for consent and in a written for if possible. From the publics perspective I think that it would be very reasonable, even I myself wouldn't want anyone to publish an image that was taken of me without my consent. But being a student photographer I find it rather difficult to be asking every person I photograph for permission, I think it would limit me in the images I would take as it is doing now in the work I am currently doing. It is recommended that if the photographer is not given permission, he could blur the face to publish the image. As any photographer would know, that could easily ruin the image not only aesthetically but also on the photographers purpose of it.
The local photographer Franklin Balzan suggests to ask 3 questions to yourself which are:
- Did the subject have a reasonable expectation of privacy when this was shot?
- Can the publication of this shot create unpleasant consequences for the individual?
- Is the subject a minor?
